Body Piercing Aftercare Instructions

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR A FRESH PIERCING

Before you touch your fresh piercing please be sure to wash hands with antibacterial soap and warm water.  You can use a medical glove or a hand sanitizer gel.  Do not touch your fresh piercing with dirty hands.  You need to avoid infections so always have clean hands.

There could be crusty matter around the piercing, remove it by taking a cotton swab and warm water.  Do not ever use your fingernails to remove it! You can use Saline Wound and Wash Solution, Pierced Ear Antiseptic, or Sea Salt to clean your piercing with.  Gently take a cotton swab with solution and clean around each hole and lubricate the jewelry and then rotate the jewelry.  Do this 2 – 3 times a day. With any piercing you need to be patient.  Each body is unique with the healing times.  The healing times can be considerably different and vary from person to person. If the fresh piercing is tender or secreting you need to continue the aftercare.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAN.

 WHAT IS NORMAL

You may bleed, bruise, discoloration, and/ or swelling is normal.  Any break in the skin, which includes a fresh piercing can bleed on and off for the next few days.  This is not any indication of any problems with the piercing.  You may take Advil, Motrin, Tylenol to help minimize swelling and reduce any discomfort.

Tenderness or discomfort around the piercing is normal.  You could feel stinging, burning, aching or any other unpleasant feelings around the piercing over the next several days or longer.  During the healing process the piercing may become itchy.

Piercings have a tendency to go through a series of “ups and downs” while you are healing.  The piercing may seem healed but it could then regress so continue the aftercare for this situation.

Tightness around the jewelry is normal.  Jewelry with not swing freely through the holes even after you are healed.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU BATHE

You can shower normal just try to keep the soap away from the fresh piercing.  Make sure to rinse the area before getting out of the shower.  Pat the area dry gently with a paper towel.  Showering is better then taking a bath because bathtubs have a tendency to harbor bacteria.

WHAT TO AVOID

Never use rubbing alcohol, peroxide, betadine, polysporin, Neosporin on the piercing.

Avoid oral contact, rough play and contact with others bodily fluids until piercing is healed.  Do not apply a band aid to the piercing.  This will limit the air circulation to the piercing.  Do not submerge your fresh piercing in pools, lakes, hot tubs, etc. because they harbor bacteria.  You may exercise during the healing process but your body will let you know what you can and can’t do until the piercing is healed.
